Doug and Sue Summers bought the lake and house in 2005 with a clear dream: to create the perfect carp‑fishing escape. With over 50 years of angling experience, Doug had already travelled the world — casting lines across the UK, Ireland, France, Canada, America, India, and even Kazakhstan — bringing a lifetime of knowledge to Woodpecker Pool.
Originally excavated to supply gravel for the N21 and provide water and food for the former owners, the lake has matured into a peaceful, wildlife‑rich haven. Its natural beauty became the foundation for Doug and Sue’s vision.
Together, they transformed the old barn into comfortable, waterside accommodation designed specifically for anglers. Just steps from the lake, it blends holiday and fishing into one seamless, relaxing experience — the way Doug and Sue always imagined it.
Woodpecker Pool isn’t just a destination. It’s a passion project, a sanctuary and a home shaped by two people who believe great fishing holidays should feel effortless, welcoming and unforgettable.

Claire Coombes
Owner & Day‑to‑Day Host
Claire is Doug and Sue’s daughter and the heart of Woodpecker Pool’s daily life. She runs the lake with care, dedication, and a genuine passion for creating unforgettable fishing holidays. As your main point of contact for bookings, questions, and on‑site support, Claire ensures every guest feels welcomed, looked after, and part of the Woodpecker Pool family.
Her commitment keeps the spirit of her parents’ vision alive — a peaceful, personal, and beautifully run retreat where anglers can relax, enjoy the water, and feel completely at home.
