Visitor Stories and Reflections

I have been lucky enough to fish at woodpecker pools over the years. The lake, the owners, the fish and accommodation are really first class. The fish gods have always been kind to me, and I have managed to catch some beautiful fish over the years. The accommodation is super comfy and rain or shine it’s lovely to spend time there. I look forward to returning very soon.

Been here and few times now and I absolutely love this place. Great hosts, great lake and great fishing. Nice lodge to stay in just by the lake. Perfect place to relax and enjoy. Would definitely recommend to go.

We’ve been coming to Woodpecker Pool annually since it first opened. We have been to many other fisheries in France but none come close to this little piece of paradise. It is maintained to a high standard, and its wonderful to sit and relax with all of the resident bird life and other wildlife around you. The fishing has been more than I could have ever wished for with many great carp and epic battles with the cats! Don’t forget the Roach either with some great bags in the right conditions. Sue and Doug have become great friends over the years, sadly Doug is no longer with us, but feel sure that Sue, Claire, Jamie and Alfie will continue to run ‘our’ little bit of heaven in the same manner.

Woodpecker Pool ‘my little piece of paradise’. I first visited Woodpecker in April 2007. Only 10 minutes in and I had a 17lb 14oz ‘original’ mirror and I was hooked from that moment on.

I have been very lucky here because Woodpecker has given me an unbelievable amount of fish.

For those seeking a relaxing fishing holiday then Woodpecker is perfect. The accommodation has been built to an immaculate standard mainly by Doug and help from others. The atmosphere is really special with stunning views and once the gate is closed the outside world is forgotten about.

The fishing is superb with a good mix of fish to be had. In the early years I only fished for the carp but in the last few years I’ve broadened my style to fish for anything that swims. I’ve now had an impressive list of different fish from Woodpecker – carp, catfish, sturgeon, pike, perch, roach, rudd, pumpkinseed, zander and bass.

I was so happy when Sue let me know she was carrying on with Woodpecker with the help of Claire. I wish them lots of luck and I hope everything goes well to carry on what my good mate Doug created. I for one will be going back time and time again and I will carry on having my little chats with Doug by the lake because I know he’ll hear me.

Woodpecker Pool from a non-angler’s point of view

Although we have never fished in our lives, we thoroughly enjoyed family holidays here in the peaceful, tranquil setting of Woodpecker pool. The barn had everything you could possibly need and was so comfortable; we slept very well. The local town provided a supermarket with everything we needed to self cater and there are some lovely places to eat out too.

We enjoyed just walking around or sitting by the pool area and appreciating all the wildlife around. We saw many species, including our favourite, the Kingfisher, but also Marsh Harrier, Mistle Thrush, Sparrowhawk, Jay, Black Kite, White Stork, Tree Creeper, Golden Oriole, Barn Owl, Goldcrest, Yellow Browed Warbler  and yes…. Woodpeckers. Green, Great Spotted and Lesser Spotted. Other special sightings within the area were Honey Buzzard, Montagu’s Harrier… I could go on. Sitting out at night was magical and the bats were spectacular! Seeing the beautiful, dark night sky with all the stars twinkling was a bonus and so magical.

We visited Rocamadour – only a two hour journey and so impressive. Collonge La Rouge was another beautiful village and well worth a visit. We needed much longer to begin to fully appreciate the area.

We wish Sue, Claire, Jamie and Alfie every success in continuing to uphold the dream, the vision and the legacy started by Doug and Sue.

Bon chance!
